We are delighted to announce the 10 charities that PGT will be supporting this year - School for Parents, Rainbow Parents Carers Forum, Castle Cavendish, Headway Nottingham, Family Care, Beeston Dementia Friends, City Arts Nottingham, Nottingham Circle, Cruse Bereavement Care, Midlands Women's Aid. These are all small, local charities that have a particular project in mind which will greatly benefit from a donation. 8/4/13: 21 Open Gardens Confirmed
This year, to celebrate our 21st anniversary, 21 gardens are open to the public, spanning practically the whole of The Park’s 150 acres.
As well as 18 private residential gardens, The Park Garden Trail has green “open spaces” that residents often use for relaxing, or to gather for community events such as the Farmers Market (last Sunday of each month), annual boules tournament and occasional street parties. These include Lincoln Circus – recently redesigned by award winning Ian Cooke, former groundsman at the University of Nottingham and judge at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, and Newcastle Circus – the geographic and social hub of The Park, where we will have live music and art, children's activities, plus BBQ Unique, Mem Saab, Aubergine Cuisine, Springhead Bar (beer, wine and cocktails).
A number of The Park’s original Victorian houses, including those designed by Fothergill Watson and TC Hine, will also be opening their gardens. These gardens are often true to their original layouts – complementing and providing an attractive aspect of the house, and a rare balance of seclusion from the City bustle yet having wide-spanning views across The Park, towards West Bridgford and Clifton. Many are characterised by rolling lawns, glimpses of the Castle, attractive terracing and walled gardens, balustrades and water features.
This year, we have an artistic theme across the Garden Trail. Artists have been invited to display their works in our gardens, and you will find a sophisticated sculpture garden on Park Valley.
While many gardens follow the traditional theme, you will also find there are well-designed contemporary gardens, with architectural plants and a minimalist feel.
The gardens are the main attraction of the day but many also offer refreshments, and a chance for you to sit and relax. You can enjoy a cream tea at Maxtoke Road, icecream at Tattershall Drive or some indulgent “strawberries and fizz” at Newcastle Court. Many gardens will also have homebaked cakes.
Other special features to look out for - a small Buddhist spirit house, a magnificent wisteria, an antique water pump and a designer wedding dress display!

2/4/13: From RHS Chelsea to Nottingham
The Park Garden Trail celebrates two links with this year’s Chelsea Flower Show. Fresh from exhibiting at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, artist Rachel Carter will now be displaying her work at The Park Garden Trail, as part of the art programme in the gardens.
Rachel is viewed as an innovative award-winning international sculptor, working in sculptural pieces for the garden or landscape setting. Trained at The University of Derby she mixes her love of art and design, with her passion for the garden and the environment. Inspiration for her work comes from many sources, including plants within Botanical gardens and the English countryside, to architecture and
machinery.
The other connection is landscaping artist Ian Cooke who in 2009 designed areas of The Park’s communal spaces. Ian has been a judge at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, one of the most prestigious accolades a gardener can receive.
Before retirement, as Grounds Manager at the University of Nottingham, his ambition was to create 'a living library' of plant specimens on the 500 acres of University landscape. Ian led a team of 42 staff including two deputies, gardeners, arborists, nurserymen and mechanics, whom he credits with bringing his vision of vibrant and breathtaking gardens to life. He won many accolades for the University campus landscape and also designed schemes for Nottinghamin Bloom’s successful Champion of Champions entry in 2008. Ian now spends his time between homes in Nottingham and California, and continues to use this philosophy in life as he continues to lecture, write and design gardens.
You can read more about Ian by visiting http://www.pampas2palms.com/
